The Name ROGERS was originaly a Germanic personal name derived from the elements 'hrod', 'renown', or old Norse,'Hrothgeirr',[fame spear] suggesting prowess with a spear. Popularised by the Nornans during the Norman Conquest of 1066 in the forms of Rogier--Roger.

      Many Rogers were closely connected to William 1 at Hastings and received Earldoms ect,and had been the name of some of the 'proudest and richest Earls and Barons'.

     First found in Cornwall, seated from early times in records of census rolls taken by early Kings of Britain for taxation.

     Woodes Rogers was Captain of the 'Duke' 36 guns, the 'Duches' 36 guns amongst others, was a privater for the English Crown. Woodes married the daughter of a Naval Commandor. In1717,he was appointed the first governor of the Bahamas and charged with ridding the Islands of Pirates.

     Woodes Rogers slogan,Expulsis Pirates/Restituta Commercia,[Piracy Expelled,Commerce Restored] remained the National Motto of the Bahamas until independence in 1973. 

      Joseph Henry Rogers 1842--1917, [my grandfather] fought with General Grant in the American Civil War1861--1865 before returning to England.

      Benjamin Lloyd Rogers 1846--1912 Josephs brother, worked a Gold Mine at Skippers Canyon New Zealand, died Dunedin New Zealand 1912.

      Henry Rogers,1808--1852 married Ann Boote, they had four sons and three daughters, Benjamin, and Joseph above, they lived at Overton Hall, Shropshire/ Wales border.

      The Surname Gaskell, with variations, Gaskill, Ggaitskell, amongst others, was probably of Gaelic Origin,[Gaisgeil]. First found in Westmoreland where they held a family seat from early times, and from the village of Gatesgill, in Cumberland. Some settled in America in 1772 and 1774.

      English novelist [1810-1865]

      John Gaskell [1866-1937] was Audreys Grandfather, born in Wigan Lancishire and moved to the Wirral Cheshire, as a Mechanical Engineer worked on the construction of Portsunlight Village and Works, were he lived with his family untill his death in 1937. Buried in Portsunlight Church.

      Audrey and I have survived after our 63 years together, 59 married. We have two Daughters, Lynda and Julie. Five grandaughters, Christien,Kym, and Maddison. Stephenie and Michell,and one grandson Paul, and at the last count eight greatgrandchildren.

      I sometimes sit and wonder, what is it all about? but at Christmas, when we are all together, I find out.

        At 14 years of age my Grandfather, Edward Humphreys,my mothers side, started as an apprentice engineer at the Sandycroft Works, North Wales, where the 'splendid screw-steamer ROYAL CHARTER' was built, and later lost in a storm at RED WHARF BAY, Moelfre, North Wales in Oct 1859.

        'the ship is a complete wreck, she has gone to pieces, this morning about 5.oclock, only 25 to 30 of us saved out of about 400 souls'.

My Father Ben Rogers was in The Navy, the first years of WW11 in his life were a mystery.  l didn't find out anything until he departed this mortal coil to join the great Navy in the sky. 1943 he was transfered to the HMHS 'Atlantis', until the end of the war.
